PAUL SALADINO Part 3: CURCUMIN? use caution… may cause iron & heart issues!
presents episode 338: Dr Paul Saladino podcast

Paper, International Journal of Cancer, page 2…
-curcumin at 2.5 & 5 mg/mL
-caused DNA damage to
mitochondria & nuclear genomes in cells
“raise concerns about
curcumin safety as the
induction of DNA alterations
is a common event in
carcinogenesis (cancer)”

-curcumin generates reactive oxygen species irreversibly by
-modifying the antioxidant enzyme thioredoxin reductase
-just because something works in cancer cell line models
-doesn’t mean it is good in
healthy humans!
-do you take chemotherapy
every day?

-the antioxidant enzyme thioredoxin reductase is
irreversibly modified by curcumin
-this is perhaps why it has cancer preventive activity
-shifting the enzyme from
antioxidant to pro-oxidant

Many compounds which show anti-carcinogenic activity…
-are pro-oxidants
-which cause programmed cell death (apoptosis)
-and DNA damage
-curcumin doesn’t differentiate
between healthy and
cancerous cells

Paper, Curcuminreview.pdf, 2017, Kathryn Nelson…
-curcumin has never been shown to be conclusively effective
in a randomized, placebo-controlled study
-curcumin has activity against the hERG channel
(helps coordinate heart beat)
-curcumin shown to be active
iron chelator in vivo
(binds to iron, making it inert)
-creating iron deficiency in mice
