Question: If not intensely resistance
training, need protein 30-50g/meal?
-STILL REQUIRE AMINO BOLUS to
stimulate muscle protein syntesis
2 ways to do this:
-animal protein bolus each meal
-resistance training
Change body composition without
training?
-yes, with protein, but must control
calories then

Resistance exercise more important
than diet according to literature
-need to challenge muscles for growth

Careful of low quality studies on protein…
-needs to be randomized, control trial
Epidemiological studies report
relative risk…
-to be clinically significant less than 2
[not causal, but worth investigation] Example: smoking & cancer risk:
-relative risk = 12
-cancer & protein = 1.1
-clinically INSIGNIFICANT

People will say: ‘meat is carninogen’
-Annuals of Internal Medicine
found no increased risk
-committee members that spread
‘meat is carninogen’ message were
virtually all vegetarians
-they threw out all high quality data
-ignored randomized, control trials &
-used epidemiological survey data
“Massive agenda problem”

If IGF1 was really a problem…
[Insulin-like Growth Factor 1] -then everyone in early 30s, when
IGF1 is highest, would have cancer

mTOR
[Mammalian Target of Rapamycin] -growth pathway
-it is IN EVERY SINGLE TISSUE
-sensitive to different macros
-skeletal muscle very sensitive
to dietary protein
-ALSO STIMULATED BY EXCESS
CALORIES & INSULIN

mTOR
“If concerned about mTOR & cancer:
worst thing: high carb diet in excess
HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH
PROTEIN & AMINO ACIDS
“like saying exercise is bad for you”
