Our brain: is in top 3 high-metabolic rate
-needs a lot of energy
-this is helping us learn about neurologic
disorders, beyond Alzheimers even
-that have a common core of metabolic deficiencies
-glucose is one of the 2 fuels that the brain relies on
-glucose is being more and more heavily relied upon, but
-it is becoming more and more problematic
-we get glucose readily in diet
“Even more, thankfully, we make ALL THAT WE NEED”

In the absence of m eating any glucose…
-the liver, when sensing glucose levels drop
-starts making glucose and sharing with body
-the liver is capable of making up
-one can fast for days, their blood glucose levels stay normal

Question: lose ability to use glucose as we age?
-so, we have an increase in blood glucose
-but, increased INABILITY to use it!
-this inability to move glucose into cells
is the foundation for many
neurological problems

Hippocampus, part of brain most relevant to
-memory and learning
-much of the glucose that comes into brain
for fuel for energy requires insulin
-insulin’s most famous effect is what it does
to glucose:
-knocks on cell door, allows glucose to enter from bloodstream
-insulin resistant brain cell WON’T OPEN UP TO GLUCOSE
-glucose glucose everywhere but not a drop to drink

Blood glucose may be twice as high as
-should be, but BRAIN CANNOT GET IT
-because insulin is not working
-normally, person eating so much glucose
there is plenty for the brain
-but when brain is insulin resistant
get an energy gap
-brain needs more energy, but insulin won’t allow glucose in

The brain energy gap creates…
-not only memory learning deficits
(Alzheimer’s Disease)
-reduce dopamine production
(Parkinson’s Disease)
-epilepsy seizures
-migraine headaches
ALL, though seem distinct on surface,
Brain Glucose Hypo Metabolism
(brain is burning less glucose than normal)
